The last unit of the year is a make your own game unit. We spent one class brainstorming and trying different parts of games out making sure the games we invent follow the four guidelines:
Safety – All games must be safe for all participants
Involvement – The best games will provide opportunities for all students to be involved in the game play
Movement – We want sustained activity throughout the entire game
Originality – An opportunity to express our creativity through game play
We then take our games out to the park for all class trials. Please ask your student how the games went or which game was their favorite.

Our next unit will be our Rugby unit. This unit is a great introduction to a sport that many students never play in the U.S. but I think is a lot of fun. We play two non-contact versions with a focus on learning the rules and having fun. Rugby is also a great cardiovascular workout and involves throwing, catching, and kicking.

As the baseball season ramps up I like to start kickball. We start out with slightly modified rules for easier play and advance to a more complicated playing style by the end of the unit. This unit is often a student favorite and we generally play it for three weeks.

We are starting a Volleyball unit in PE. The first few classes we are going to focus on basics: Serving, passing, and setting. Then we will play with a beach ball for a class and then with a regular size but softer than usual ball for a few classses.
